To Make Google 20 Percent Efficient, Sundar Pichai Hints at Possible Layoffs
Google has been aiming towards slowing down its hiring process to form the organization more efficient and financially stable. Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google and Alphabet, on Tuesday had affirmed that he needs to make the company 20 percent more efficient which was hinting at potential job cuts.

Google had hired a lot of employees after the pandemic and now it was dealing with variety of economic problems. Earlier, there have been talks regarding potential layoffs at Google, though the company itself had announced that if the employees would not take their work seriously, there would be serious outcomes. Currently, the announcement by Pichai was clearly unwrapping Google’s idea to reduce employment.
Pichai gave more details regarding however he was aiming towards the company operate more effectively amid economic uncertainties and a general delay in ad expenditure of which Google had been benefiting the most.
Pichai has been referring to microeconomics and had agreed on the actual fact that the company has become slower once there has been a rise within the worker count. “The extra we tend to understand microeconomic, the extra we would feel terribly unsure regarding it. The microeconomics performance was correlated to ad spend, consumer spend and so on.”
The Google CEO further added that, 'Across everything we do, we were able to be slower to make decisions. You would look at it end-to-end and would figure out the way to build the company 20 per cent additional productive.”
Notably, Sundar Pichai has previously suggested reducing the employees. In July, Pichai had sent a memo to his workers and mentioned that the company would “slowing down the pace of hiring for the rest of the year”. Therefore, he had declared that the company would have to “be more entrepreneurial” and work with “greater urgency, sharper focus, and additional hunger than we have been showing on sunnier days”.
Well, Google has not been pausing its hiring process entirely. It would be hiring engineering, technical and different other crucial roles however would be “pausing development and re-deploying resources to higher priority areas”.
Further Pichai in a memo has stated that 'For the balance of 2022 and 2023, we would be focusing on our hiring on engineering, technical and different crucial roles, and ensure the nice talent we do hire was aligned with our long priorities.'
